Jonathan is particularly well known across the North-West Queensland area due to his work with remote communities.

Multi-generational and complex trauma

Trauma can affect multiple people and in multiple ways.

It can hit us in our faces at the same time as below the belt.

That’s why trauma therapy needs to start bit by bit, with care.

EMDR

When trauma ‘hits’ us, it can be very hard to get back to normal.

“Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing” is a therapy that helps bypass the blockages the brain sets up after trauma, and it takes the ‘heat’ out of those difficult memories.

EMDR is a highly evidence-based treatment for trauma and other mental health issues, and Jonathan has graduated from three levels of training at the EMDR Institute Australia.

In Jonathan’s work in Aboriginal communities, he’s been a guest.

His learning as a counsellor has come from the generosity of those who’ve invited him in.

‘Yarning’ was what has grandparents did, but it is also a gift that was taught to him, on country.

Narrative therapy, CBT and others

Jonathan has a wide range of training and is experienced in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and a Masters degree in Narrative Therapy.

This didn’t happen by accident – a wide range of skills in your ‘backpack’ really does help, maybe because we humans are such individuals.

A whole range of problems and concerns

Sometimes you just need to talk to somebody who ‘gets it’.

Jonathan’s been working for 20 odd years with people about problems like anxiety, depression, domestic and Family violence, alcohol and other drugs issues, trauma issues, ADHD and ASD.

He ‘gets it’ and he has tools to help.

Telehealth services

As the pandemic taught us, being flexible can make a huge difference. Ready to Yarn has learnt how to sustain effective conversations over the internet – whether it be by phone or Zoom, your connection with your counsellor is always first and foremost.
